Three Cheers for Orientalism
“They [Muslims] know who they are and what they are and what they want, a quality which we seem to have lost to a very large extent.”
We would have gone to war without the teaching of Bernard Lewis… but it helped. He delivered the 2007 AEI Irving Kristol Lecture.

Opium of the Asses
If you want to ensure that religion becomes more socially and politically active than ever…nay, more– if you want to unite workers of the word from Al Sharpton to Pat Robertson, then you should follow the examples of our sci-ing creatures Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and Christopher Hitchens: write insulting books excoriating believers.
Still, I consider Harris and Hitchens national treasures. First-rate gadflies. I am a bit less enthusiastic about the evangelical atheism of the foreigner Mr. Dawkins though at his best he’s worth hearing out.

An Eye for an I
Cogito ergo sum or Cogito ergo cogito sum?
If Descartes’ intention was to affirm the I, then what is the entity that is affirming the I? It would seem that there would have to be an I already present: An I for an I.
The eastern sage would observe that thought creates the thinker not the other way around. But I am the one afraid of that snake coiled up by my ankle, am I not?
What is necessary to fear the snake, replies the sage, is an eye.

Fox Parox
There is a curious phenomenon in the land: A major television news network that doesn’t slight conservatives.
Fox the hedgehog: I recall an interview with Roger Ailes in which he revealed the secret of FOX’s success (i paraphrase): ‘We discovered a niche market–half of the American people!’.
Needless to say this is deeply upsetting to our ‘educated’ class who for well over half a century have insisted that all the major issues be presented from a liberal perspective. They are deeply committed to ‘fairness’ only if liberals like themselves get to control the content of that fairness.
Somebody needs to compile the best of the thousands of hateful and or hysterical responses from our good lovers of humanity. ‘Fox Paroxysms’ or something…
Here’s the cute little Fox Parox from Mr. Kantor–a fellow Roanoker–that inspired this post.

Frost’s Inferno
TatteredMan is in a dark wood where 2222 roads have emerged, converged, diverged, and submerged. It’s a question whether or not he shall turn out to be the hero of his own life or anyone else’s.
TatteredMan can’t go home… TatteredMan can’t go on, but he’ll go on…whether or not it makes any difference.
